Before joining El País, he was a reporter for El Español after a period as a freelancer in which he published his first book, Fariña, a portrait of narcotrafficking in his native Galicia. He began his journalistic career with Radio Coruña Cadena SER, RNE Galicia and Marca. He also worked in the editing room of the now defunct Diario Qué!, where he first encountered the story of Pablo Ibar.
