Growing Fears

Original title: Temores crecientes
Synopsis:

Horror and intrigue lurk beneath the powerful premise of one of Edgar Allan Poe’s most emblematic stories.

Ana and Alba are two friends who are fed up with their lives and the environment around them. As intelligent as they are eccentric, they are true misanthropes who enjoy sharing their musical, cinematic, and literary tastes. One of their favourite stories is Edgar Allan Poe’s The Man of the Crowd, an intriguing tale in which an enigmatic figure wanders restlessly through the streets of Victorian London. In just a few months they will say goodbye to high school and start university, but the agonising apathy that suffocates them in the meantime leads them to invent a game to kill time and get out of their monotonous routine. They decide to look for the man of the crowd and follow his shadow through the streets of Barcelona. An innocent game in which the frontiers that separate reality and fantasy are soon blurred, throwing Ana and Alba into an uncertain world full of dangers.

Highlights Growing Fears

1

Finalist of the 2020 Minotauro Prize.

Psychological and everyday horror made even more terrifying as it takes place in a recognisable and familiar setting. The writer recovers Poe’s premise and elegantly reinvents it by bringing it to contemporary life.

An homage to classic horror literature with reminiscences of the masters of the gothic tale such as Poe and Shirley Jackson.
